Jibboom Club #1 GAM

July 19, 2016 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Who guards the entrance into New York?

Over nearly 400 years, many have served in this role. Find out about one of the storied entries into the harbor and how our military’s presence there evolved. The monthly meeting of the Jibboom Club #1 will feature a presentation by John Miceli CAPT, USCGR (ret) who will trace the military history of New York Harbor’s strategically located Governors Island from the 1637 Dutch occupation through the present.
Its location in New York Harbor and proximity to Manhattan and Brooklyn made Governors Island a logical site for the many key US Army commands based there from 1794-1994. The military’s last presence was from 1966-1996 when the US Coast Guard Atlantic Area Headquarters was located there.

Captain Micelli will discuss the history of the island, describe during his time of service there, and also explore the recent dynamics of Governor Island’s transformation into a huge, multifaceted urban park. Please join the Jibboom Club for a lively discussion about this unique, historic place. All are welcome, and light refreshments will be served.
